Free or Low-Cost Spay/Neuter for Community Cats in Galveston County

**List of clinics starts after “Humane Feral Cat Traps” section below**

Tips for Trapping

If you need to trap a cat for an appointment (you can’t pick them up and place them in the trap yourself), we recommend starting at least 2 days before scheduled appointments. For best results, withhold food from the cat the day you are trying to trap and use smelly foods like fishy canned cat food, mackerel, or tuna in the trap.

The cats can spend the night before the surgery in the trap. Make sure the trap is in a climate-controlled and weather-protected area. Cover the trap with a towel or sheet to keep the cat calm.

The cats should also spend 1 to 2 nights in the trap after the surgery while they recover. You should carefully place food and water in the trap with the cat during this time. If you have a safe space to keep the cats confined (like a spare room, garage or large dog kennel), you can have them recover there instead.

We don’t recommend keeping a cat in a trap to recover for more than 2 days, unless there is a real issue. They will be less stressed and recover easier outside of the trap.

Ear-Tipping

Every clinic “ear-tips” feral cats during the spay/neuter surgery. Ear-tipping involves surgically removing a small portion of one of a cat’s ears while the cat is under anesthesia for spay or neuter surgery. It is the universally accepted way to signify that a community cat has been spayed or neutered, which means no new kittens will be born. If you have more questions about ear-tipping, you can learn more here.

Humane Feral Cat Traps

Every clinic requires that feral cats come to the clinic in a humane feral cat trap, even if the cat is relatively friendly outdoors. You can purchase your own trap from places like Tractor SupplyWalmartHome Depot, your local feed store, pest store, etc. You may even be able to find some gently used traps on places like Facebook Marketplace, eBay and Craigslist. The trap should be at least 32 inches long.

If you would like to borrow a trap, we do have traps available. You can learn more about our trap bank program and sign-up to borrow a trap here. Please note, there is a $20 refundable deposit required per trap.
